Over two years ago in summer 2019, Nic and I purchased a Land Rover Discovery 2 from 2003 to make videos with for the Breakdown Automotive channel. For anyone following the channel back then, you’ll know that our Disco 2 Land Rover ownership was very short lived, but we never quite discussed what happened. Finally, after all this time, here’s what happened to us and our Land Rover Discovery 2.

About this video: A couple of years back, I felt like I had made every possible video with our L322 Range Rover. I had gone over common problems, misconceptions, ownership expenses, and literally every detail I could think of on the car. We had taken it off-road, gone on roadtrips, documented service repairs, and truly put the L322 Range Rover through the paces. The channel had grown to a fair amount of monthly revenue, and it was making the payments on the Range Rover. So naturally, I figured it was time to start looking for a second Land Rover for the channel to replicate what we had built with the L322.

After a few weeks of searching, we came across a stunning cosmetic example of the 2003 Land Rover Discovery 2. It had nearly everything we were looking for - a well kept exterior condition with a great interior spec. It was also an SE7 model, which was rather rare at the time. Most models didn’t feature the 7 seats in that configuration, so we figured it would be the perfect example to create videos with for our channel.

Unfortunately, we failed to realize one thing - none of that mattered if the vehicle was a mechanical mess. The Discovery 2 that we purchased had rusted straight through the frame - so much so it was dangerous to even tow. Add to that, it had transfer case issues that we were unaware of and many more mechanical gremlins that made themselves known over the coming days after purchase.

After just a few days of owning the Disco 2, we decided that we would book a Land Rover Owner’s Day in Asheville, North Carolina for some content with the vehicle. Before we made the trek up there, we decided it would be best for us to try taking the Disco 2 on some easy off-road adventures - mainly driving on the flat beaches of Daytona Beach, FL.

Not too long after we got the vehicle off-road did we notice it had some major flaws. The engine started overheating rapidly, and all we knew to do was pull over and let it cool down for a while. During that time, though, we also noticed that the Disco 2 was having some major issues with getting power to the wheels. The transfer case was nearly shot, and it was slipping out of gear every 10 seconds or so. Not knowing what to do, we managed to get the Disco 2 off the beaches and into the parking lot in front of the beach ramp in Ormond Beach.

After we had the vehicle in the parking lot, I decided to put the Disco 2 in park, which went well. If you saw the video from a couple of years back, you’ll know the dreaded sound that followed after putting it in park. From there, we waited on a tow truck to move the 2003 Land Rover Discovery II back to the house where it would sit for the next month or so. During that time, we moved to a new house and had the Disco 2 pulled from the yard, onto a tow truck, and placed in the driveway of our new house.

A few weeks later, we decided it was finally time to put the Disco 2 story behind us and donated it to a charity. From there, they sold the vehicle at auction and kept the proceeds. After that, we were able to write off the expense on our taxes and move on. All in, nothing too crazy. However, it did put a pause to the automotive videos for a while as we focused on different avenues in our company.

Fast forward a couple of years, and here we are once again posting automotive content. So there is it! That’s what officially happened to the Land Rover Discovery 2. All in all, it’s pretty simple of a story, but we felt it was necessary to share after all this time. Thank you for watching this video on what happened to us and our Land Rover Discovery 2. I hope you all enjoyed. Be sure to subscribe and turn on notifications for more content!
