The word Thalassophobia literally means “fear of the sea” and my apologies to any Greek viewers if I haven’t pronounced the word correctly.

The “sea” means any large body of water, so the Great Lakes in America would be somewhere to avoid if you’re suffering from this problem.

The problem with this fear is that it can take in any large body of water, which means a lot of normal things are ruled out. You’d be unlikely to go on a beach holiday if you’re suffering from thalassophobia and even flying over an ocean can trigger the response.

So, how can you overcome your fear?

One way – maybe the scariest – is to face your fear. Obviously don’t do it on your own – get help from a friend – and it’s probably best to build up the size of water that you’re tackling. Maybe a large swimming pool, then a river estuary (but without sight of the main ocean) before building up to visiting the ocean and even then it’s probably worth going somewhere that you can see land across a large bay or something similar.

If your fear isn’t just the water but the things it contains then visiting somewhere like Sea World or a well stocked zoo or aquarium could be worth a trip. There’s safety in terms of lots of other people there plus very thick sheets of glass if you’re looking at creatures like sharks swimming around.

Another option is to get professional help.
