“Swing Low, Sweet Chariot," was composed by Wallace Willis, a Choctaw freedman in the old Indian Territory near Hugo, Oklahoma, U.S.A. sometime after 1865. James Brainard Taylor Marsh includes an early version of the text and music to, “Swing Low Sweet Chariot,” in his 1873 publication, “The Story of the Jubilee Singers, with their Songs.” The text refers to the Old Testament account of the Prophet Elijah's ascent into Heaven by chariot (2 Kings 2:11) as well as I Thessalonians 4:16-17.

The Saint Anne Catholic High School for Girls in Enfield, England, U.K. was established in 1994 from a merger between Holy Family Convent School and The Saint Angela School for Girls. Presently, Saint Anne’s is the highest performing non-selective school in the London Borough of Enfield.

St. Anne Catholic High School for Girls prides itself in its award-winning gospel choir composed of students from all year groups. The school has entered numerous competitions and performed many times during events for the school and also for the public; in 2018 they reached the semi-final of the British Broadcasting Company's “Songs of Praise.”

The students worship Jesus Christ as a school at the Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel and Saint George, 45 London Road, Enfield EN2 6DS

The school enrolls more than 900 students total in grades 7-12. It is physically divided into two locations within the Borough of Enfield. Recent graduates of Saint Anne’s were accepted into 39 different universities.

The motto of the school is based on Micah 6:8 which reads, “Act Justly, Love Tenderly, Walk Humbly with your God."

The lyrics to the song are:

Refrain:
Swing low, sweet chariot,
Coming for to carry me home.
Swing low, sweet chariot,
Coming for to carry me home.

I looked over Jordan, and what did I see,
Coming for to carry me home.
A band of angels coming after me,
Coming for to carry me home.

[Refrain]

If you get there before I do,
Coming for to carry me home.
Tell all my friends I'm coming too,
Coming for to carry me home.

[Refrain]

The brightest day that ever I saw
Coming for to carry me home.
When Jesus washed my sins away,
Coming for to carry me home.

[Refrain]

I'm sometimes up and sometimes down,
Coming for to carry me home.
But still my soul feels heavenly bound,
Coming for to carry me home.

[Refrain]
