Halo 2 had big shoes to fill. Halo: Combat Evolved was a momentous game, which drew players into its world by a sharp plot, standout characters, and a world that felt worth exploring. Halo: Combat Evolved laid a perfect foundation for stories to come.

It’s fortunate then, that from a storytelling perspective, Halo 2 is an almost perfect continuation of its predecessor. It fleshes out the world greatly, it ups the stakes, and it makes us care more about its central cast.

In this retrospective video essay, we’ll be critiquing Halo: 2, and how it uses every tool at its disposal, from the script to the environmental and level design, to the gameplay, to spin its tale.
