Director's Commentary:
Hey, I want to see if I can use the YouTube description for something more than just promoting links. I want to add a director's commentary here where I talk about the creative process of making each video. Hopefully it'll help you guys get a better understanding of how I make my films. If you guys want me to keep doing this please let me know!
This film is a lot shorter than the other films I've made. This isn't intentional at all. As a YouTuber you obviously want a longer video so you can get higher watch time (the algorithm favors this). But as much as I wanted to make this video longer, I felt that if I added anything else, it would take away from the story. I wanted to say this because as a filmmaker, good storytelling should be your #1 priority, this means that sometimes you have to cut that beautiful shot you wanted to keep, or take out the music you were so excited to use, or in this case, make the video shorter because anything more would have been boring.
As you can see, the voice over (VO) is the main attraction of this video, it's the thing that drives the story. The way that I wrote this script was different from anything I've done before. Rather than write as if I were performing for an audience, I just journaled privately as if nobody was going to read my work. Through this I was able to come off a lot more genuine. I found myself talking about things that I might have never shared if I wrote regularly. I encourage you to find a medium (journaling, talking to a camera, taking notes on your phone) where you can take away all emotional barriers and become your most vulnerable self, that's where your best writing is.
As important as the audio is, you need to support it with visuals. In this film I had a really difficult time trying to find a story that would compliment the VO. I didn't want it to look like your average video essay or music video where the visuals do just about nothing for the story, but it was hard. I decided to go in the direction of a "day in the life". I just strung together footage that I had shot throughout my time at home, eating, biking, building legos with my family. I wanted the viewer to follow me and feel the mundaneness of my day to day life.
This video is defiantly not my best, but I think it was just good to get out of the way. I was able to experiment with a new form of writing that I will definitely use in future films, but I would love there to be a more exciting visual story next time (which would require me to vlog a lot more of my life).
Love,
Ryan
