Director's Commentary:
The making of this film took about 6 days. 2 days to write the script and 4 days to shoot and edit everything. Even though this is only a 6 minute video, this is a huge achievement for me and a step away from the overthinking, perfectionist mindset that I held onto for years.
As much progress as I’ve made, however, that doesn’t mean I didn’t fall back into old bad habits. I still found myself spending hours overthinking sentences when I really didn’t have to. I’m realizing more and more, the courage and discipline you need to NOT be a perfectionist. It really requires you to strip away your ego and accept where you are in your career. At first, it absolutely sucks, like the first few times you go to a gym. But since I’ve been able push myself, I’ve gotten to share more videos with you guys and build a more intimate relationship with my films.
I can experiment with different mediums, for example, with this video I learned how to animate my footage to look like they are paintings using a software called Ebsynth (highly recommend you try it out). I learned some more color grading techniques to make my footage look more filmic. And I also wanted to try out a more minimalistic thumbnail design.
These ideas all might feel weird at the moment, but I love that. I love that because that uneasy feeling means I’m exploring, I’m testing the waters with things people might hate. And hey if it's really that bad there is always next time.
