This sand train has 2 Canadian National Locomotives on it, a very rare
treat for us to see here. This train originated in Wisconsin. Was taken by
Canadian National to Chicago where it was handed off to Norfolk Southern
to bring here in Waynesburg, Pa.

This train is carrying a special sand, Northern White Sand which is an
excellent type of sand for fracking natural gas wells. It is called a
proppant because of the sand grains shape which is rounded. It
"props open" the layers of shale which holds the natural gas and allows
the natural gas to flow out more easily. The proppant sand is a mixture
of 100 mesh sand and 40/70 mesh sand which allows the sand to
penetrate better the shale fractures. Proppant sand is less than a
millimeter across it's grain size.
