CES 2018 saw the first working demo of the Fuse 1, Formlabs' new SLS 3D printer.

Eduardo Torrealba is the lead engineer for the Fuse 1, which has been in the works for 3 years. He claims the machine has seen very few changes since its announcement in June, 2017.

Eduardo sees SLS and SLA as complementary processes. Although nylon SLS prints aren't as high resolution, they are much stronger than SLA parts and great for end use applications.

Compared to industrial SLS technology, one big difference is the material color. Darker colors require lower laser power, allowing for less equipment and lower cost. The Fuse can use up to 50% recycled material (salvaged from previous print jobs).

Non-beta Fuse 1 printers are expected to begin shipping in Fall 2018.
