Quran 2:102 mentions the angels of Babylon, Harut and Marut. The Quran says the people were misled by satans and angels. The Quran does not go into detail about what the angels taught, but says the angels warned the people beforehand that they should not fall into the temptation to disbelieve. The famous commentaries of the Quran on the other hand include fantastical stories about how and why the angels came down, and they describe how the angels were tempted by a beautiful woman (descibed as Venus), committed terrible sins and were imprisoned in Babylon. These stories contradict Islamic teachings about angels, who are supposed to be obedient and faithful to God. Dr. Shabir Ally says these stories may have been conglomerations of stories from other traditions which were given an Islamic flavour.
