Lalo, in the north-western Hawaiian islands, is where almost all the world’s black-footed albatross hatch. But up to 10% of young birds will be lost to hungry island visitors: tiger sharks. In June and July, when young birds practice flying, tiger sharks are lured to these tropical waters by the promise of food. They eat other residents, like green turtles and Hawaiian monk seals, but albatross are a favorite. For each fledgling that takes off, it’s a flight for survival …
