Neck tension always involves a compensatory breathing component. When we lose stability somewhere in our body, our normal movement and breathing mechanics break down, so we use accessory breathing muscles to compensate for lack of diaphragmatic breathing. This creates neck tension but also impacts our scapular and arm movement. Diaphragmatic breathing requires pelvic stability through hamstrings, adductors, glutes and abdominals, and the ability to flex and extend your shoulders without the neck interfering. All of this stability and movement must happen synchronously, because that is what walking is: the rhythmic syncing of arm and leg movements that allow a neck to remain relaxed.
