The majority of shoulder pain and stiffness can come from capsulitis, or inflammation of the joint capsule, impingement from adhesions, bursititis, shoulder tendonitis and arthritis. Shoulder dislocation is a whole other category but would be quite obvious if you had it. We try and "baby" the shoulder when we have pain but intelligent movement that does not go into pain is usually the better call and stretching is a big part of that pain relieving regime. Regaining flexibility usually brings us toward greater function and less pain.

A stiff shoulder is a painful shoulder, and stretching allows for motion and relieves stiffness. The more the shoulder is in use, the better off it will feel.

This video is a follow-up to our trigger point therapy for shoulder pain relief videos that use a Theracane and/or a massage ball. Trigger points do great when they are pushed on and held for 40 to 90 seconds until the pain subsides at least by 50%. Then we stretch.
Biomechanics including exercise modification, ergonomics, sleep positioning, automobile seat positioning can be necessary when approaching myofascial pain syndrome, unstable shoulders, deltoid bursitis, frozen shoulder, bicipital tendonitis, rotator cuff syndrome and more.
A myofascial trigger point is a hyper-irritable spot, usually within a taut band of a muscle. Trigger points are painful when you push on them and tend to refer pain to another location. They can, also, alter the motor function of a muscle and wreak havoc on biomechanics. Tim Sawyer, PT takes you on a guided tour of your shoulder and how to stretch the subscapularis pectoralis Minor, infraspinatus, upper trapezius, deltoid, supraspinatus, teres minor, scalenes, rhomboid, anterior deltoid and posterior deltoid.
In our office, we use manual therapy, extracorporeal shockwave therapy, class IV laser therapy, spray and stretch and deep relaxation techniques to address the trigger points.
