Live 24/7 Tracker: • Cyclone Gamane intensifying off the c...
After becoming a tropical storm yesterday, Gamane has cranked up its intensity and is now a Category 1 on the Saffir Simpson scale, with winds near 75 miles per hour (120kph) sustained. The storm is very close to the northern reaches of Madagascar, where gale force winds are likely occurring.
The storm is expected to track very close to Madagascar and start to turn southwards soon, meaning that land interaction could have a large effect on the storm than first thought. As such, the intensity forecast has been revised downwards.
Gamane is expected to reach Mauritius this weekend as it turns southeastwards, and could deliver hurricane force winds and flooding rains. Rainfall near the center of the storm is extreme, and could produce totals of 50 inches (1250mm). Along the coast of Madagascar, storm totals of 16 inches (400mm) are possible. In Mauritius, 200mm is currently expected.
