Nissan Qashqai e-Power Review: The Hybrid For EV Evangelists

The latest Nissan Qashqai gets an intriguing new hybrid powertrain that aims to bridge the gap between gasoline and full electrification. The so-called e-Power setup uses a small 1.5-liter gasoline engine solely as a generator to charge the battery, with the wheels driven by an electric motor. It's an unorthodox approach, but does it work in practice?

In the city, the Qashqai e-Power is impressively refined. Like an EV, the lack of direct combustion engine noise makes for serene progress around town. The instant torque from the electric motor also enables brisk acceleration from a stop. At low speeds, you may not even notice the gas engine kicking in to recharge the battery.

However, the Nissan's party trick falls apart at higher speeds. Get the Qashqai up to highway velocities and the gasoline mill sounds strained as it tries to meet the increased energy demands. Suddenly, that EV-like tranquility is shattered by an obtrusive drone from under the hood. Overtaking requires lots of advance planning and patience.

Around turns, the Qashqai is composed if ultimately uninspiring to drive. The numb steering saps engagement, though body roll is well-checked. This is clearly meant as a well-mannered family hauler rather than a back-road barnstormer.

Inside, the Qashqai posts a solid if unspectacular score. The cabin appears well-built from decent materials, but the design skews more functional than fashionable. Nissan's infotainment tech also trails the best in this segment. At least Android Auto and wireless Apple CarPlay are on hand to pick up the slack.

Practicality is a high point, with the Qashqai serving up competitive passenger and cargo space. Even with the e-Power's bulky battery pack, there's still a useful 504 liters of cargo volume with the rear seatbacks up.

While not necessarily more efficient than conventional hybrid rivals, the Qashqai e-Power makes a case for itself in urban areas where gas engines are rarely called upon. Those seeking a stepping stone to full electrification may find this an appealing halfway house. Just don't expect too much driving verve or touring refinement.
