This 1937 Morris 25 was converted to MIC 127 Inspection car in 1939

Motor inspection cars were introduced to the South Australian Railways by Commissioner Webb during the 1920s. They were used by managers to visit various country divisions. Paymasters used them as well, to deliver pay packets to construction and maintenance gangs working a long way from home base.

The 1937 Morris 25 HP series III sedan was one of at least eight Morris vehicles converted for use on rail on the South Australian Railways – two of them being specifically modified to run on narrow-gauge tracks.

The modifications included a hydraulic jack built into the chassis, which enabled the vehicle to be turned around. MIC 127 came into service on the Peterborough Division just before the Second World War in 1939. During the 1940s it was hired to the Commonwealth Railways for short periods, when it travelled as far north as Alice Springs. It remained in South Australian Railways service until 1977.

The vehicle on display at the Peterborough Railway Museum was restored to original condition in the 1980s by workers at Peterborough Nissan, but when used by the SAR was cream with red flashes on the bonnet. It could reach 60 mph (100 kph) – all without the need (or ability) to hold onto a steering wheel!
