Hepatoblastoma is a rare liver cancer mostly found in young children. Treating this cancer requires special care and sometimes a liver transplant if the tumor can't be removed by surgery.

Avnesh Bhabani Shankar Meher, a young boy, faced this challenge. His treatment began with chemotherapy in Bhubaneswar, but the tumor involved important blood vessels, making surgical removal impossible. His care was transferred to Narayana Hospital, SRCC, Mumbai, under the expert team of Dr Ashok Thorat, Senior Consultant, Liver transplant and HPB Surgery and Dr Aditya Kulkarni, Associate Consultant, Pediatrics Gastroenterology and Hepatology.

On arrival, Avnesh was undernourished, a common issue in sick children. The hospital team focused on improving his nutrition to prepare him for a liver transplant. His mother was found to be a suitable donor, which was a relief as family donors make the process smoother.

After ensuring Avnesh was ready for surgery, the transplant was performed successfully. He stayed in the intensive care unit for a few days and continued to recover in the hospital ward. Just 15 days post-surgery, Avnesh was healthy enough to go home.
