I Review the Chevy/GMC 1500 6.2L V8 (L87) Engine as a heavy duty mechanic and go over the pros and cons of this big powerful V8 engine. I talk about the specs, horsepower, towing ability and fuel economy (MPG) of this engine. Finally I dive into the top 3 major issues (Dynamic Fuel Management) with this 6.2L engine if I was going to be buying it.

I hope you guys are having a good weekend. I was lucky enough to get my hands on this 6.2L beast of an engine in the chevy/gmc 1500's. The engine does sound like big displacement V8 without a doubt and when you put your foot down there is alot of power there.

so the big things that I like about this engine as the power delivery, the fact that it is a simple push rod V8 and has good strong bottom end which is very classic from GM they know how to make a strong V8.

along with that power comes great towing ability, this engine can tow up to 13,300lbs but I imagine if this engine was strapped to a heavy duty truck it could tow well north of that. so my point was that this engine will tow so much easier for you and just make life better when towing.

now where the rubber meets the road is the known issues.

the first issues I my opinion is that this engine needs to run premium fuel and that just kind of rubs me the wrong way. I don't think GM should very be putting a performance based engine in a pick up truck. I think they should of lowered the compression ratio to allow for 87 fuel.

The second thing that is killing these engine is the Dynamic fuel management system or the cylinder de-activation technology in these engines. This is resulting in lifter and valve train failures like crazy and it's simply killing the reliability of these engines.

the third issues is Direct injection carbon build up. I've talked about this before but carbon can build up on the intake and intake valves resulting in loss of power, misfires and rough idling

the final thing that caught my eye was the variable displacement oil pump. now GM is not having issues with this but it just something that caught my eye and I thought I would talk about it.

Hope you guys liked the video!
