This 27-minute podcast features Dr. Ilan Meyer:
• Distinguished Senior Scholar of Public Policy at the Williams Institute, UCLA School of Law and Professor Emeritus, Columbia Mailman School of Public Health, Sociomedical Sciences
• Research is focused on study prejudice and stigma and how it affects health by increasing minority stress in sexual and gender minority populations.
• Currently working on a study of aging LGBT populations in the United States.
• Publications: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/my...
• Most recently has completed two related studies of LGBT populations assessing a diverse issues including identity, community, stress, and well-being www.generationsstudy.com and www.TransPop.org - U.S. national probability study of stress, identity, health, and health care utilization across three cohorts of sexual minorities, and TransPop, the first national probability sample of transgender individuals in the U.S.
• In several highly cited papers, Meyer has developed a model of minority stress. The model has guided his and other investigators’ population research on LGBT health disparities by identifying the processes by which social stressors impact health and describing the harm to LGBT people from prejudice and stigma.
• Paper which describes sampling methodology: Meyer, I.H., Marken, S., Russell, S.T., Frost, D.M., & Wilson, B.D.M. (2020). An innovative approach to the design of a national probability sample of sexual minority adults. LGBT Health, 7(2),101-108. http://doi.org/10.1089/lgbt.2019.0145
• Earlier paper that reviews some of the challenges and sampling issues:
Meyer, I. H., & Wilson, P. A. (2009). Sampling lesbian, gay, and bisexual populations. Journal of Counseling Psychology, 56(1), 23–31. https://doi.org/10.1037/a0014587
