Toronto Fire Services (TFS) and the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) Researcher Michael Williams-Bell worked together to better understand the effects of extreme weather conditions on the health and safety of the fire service personnel. This is being done with research examining various aspects of the human body (thermal physiology, cardiovascular physiology, biomechanics, and ergonomics) of cold blizzard conditions (Typical of many Canadian Cities in the winter months) on the physical and physiological demands of auto extrication in fire fighters. The data obtained from this study will aid in the understanding of the physical limitations encountered during extreme weather events and lead to understanding of the physical limitations encountered during extreme weather events and help determine the most appropriate techniques to employ that will minimize health and occupational risks during these emergency events.
