Much software development has been driven by various forms of manufacturing metaphor, the assumption that it’s all about flow-based efficiency. But the reality is that technology is capable of delivering far more than people know what to ask for and any new development (now we have shifted core transaction systems) needs to take a co-evolutionary approach. The drive for digitization often ignores human capability and insight. Understanding unarticulated needs, shifting technology into distributed networks so that novel applications can emerge, dealing with essential ambiguity all require an ecological metaphor. In turn that means we can’t afford to lock into single frameworks but we need a multi-vendor, multi-method approach which can adapt very quickly for changing needs and situations.
