While the 1970s was the decade that birthed the hot hatch and the 1990s really saw it explode into the mainstream, it was the 1980s that saw the major growth of the smallest sportscars in the world.
Following on from such cars as the first Volkswagen Golf GTI, the Renault 5 Alpine, Simca 1100 TI and Vauxhall HS Chevette, the hot hatch scene exploded in the decade of Thatcher, Reagan and the end of the Soviet Union. Stars included the Peugeot 205 GTI, Ford Escort RS Turbo, Renault 5 GT Turbo and second generation Golf GTI. Out of all the legions of hot hatches that emerged, these are our favourites.
