The second generation Mazda6 was redesigned for the 2009 model year, with the wagon and hatchback versions being dropped there. It is a widened and lengthened version of the model sold elsewhere, with larger engines. Reviewers have noted its coupe-like roofline and sportier style.
This Mazda6 was available with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that puts out 170 horsepower. Those who have tested that engine generally like it, but most reviewers have driven its larger engine choice, a 272-horsepower 3.7-liter V6 that makes it one of the fastest cars in this class. Mazda wins points with enthusiasts by offering a six-speed manual transmission with the four-cylinder, but loses points for selling the big V6 with only a six-speed auto. Four-cylinder models can be purchased with a five-speed automatic gearbox as well.
