I'm sure 99% of women probably purchased the ResMed AirSense 10 'For Her' because they identify with being a 'Her' (and it has pretty leaves printed on it). There's no doubt it was some very clever marketing by ResMed (The only cpap manufacturer that has gender-specific cpap products).

That being said, just because you identify with being a woman, doesn't mean the ResMed 'For Her' algorithm is the best choice of treatment for your obstructive sleep apnea.

Truth is, the 'For Her' algorithm has some significant limitations and when used with the wrong patient it can cause more harm than good!

No.1 - It will not respond to obstructive sleep apnea events passed 12cmH20. If you have severe apnea and require more pressure to remove the obstruction then you will not be provided by the 'for her' algorithm.

No.2 - It has a MOVING MINIMUM AUTOSET pressure and from what i've seen this can cause some big problems! It only takes 2 apneas in short succession to trigger the 'for her' algorithm to set a new HIGHER minimum auto and then the pressure will not drop below this value.

The example with Kath's data is the perfect example. When Kath is on a fixed pressure (cpap mode) of only 6cm her AHI (apnea hypopnea index) is consistently below 1. When she changed to Auto "for her' mode, not only did her AHI start trending much higher but the algorithm also set a new MINIMUM AUTOSET PRESSURE 40% higher! This constant high pressure then caused CENTRAL APNEA and a whole lot more CPAP side effects.

The take home message is "Just because you're a 'her' doesn't mean the 'for her' algorithm is the right treatment option. You really need to review your data to make sure it's not doing more harm than good.
