Dr. D-Flo has an off-the-shelf part without any CAD data that needs to be machined on his CNC mill. The curvature of the part prevents typical fixturing with a vise, so David seeks the help of the 3D scanning and printing specialists at 3DChimera in Miami, Florida. CEO Alex Hussain and Application Engineer Julian Cecil walk David through how to take a physical part and create a watertight digital model through 3D scanning and reverse engineering. With a CAD model in hand, a digital soft jaw was created by subtracting the outside profile of the part with a Kurt jaw. This model was converted to a mesh and printed out of a carbon fiber composite filament on a FFF printer, which resulted in a stiff geometry that could firmly grip the outside of the part for machining. While the resulting soft jaw was a great solution for David’s workholding problem, Alex and Julian demonstrate an alternative pathway to creating the part with the desired feature on Sintratec’s Industrial SLS Printer, the S2. Julian explains the benefits of powder bed fusion compared to traditional filament-based printers and how the S2 is uniquely positioned for batch prints. After the print finishes, Alex provides insight into the post-processing of SLS parts with dyes and polishing. The finished SLS parts were spectacular. There were no layer lines or artifacts commonly left behind from additive processes. This trip was an awesome window into how additive manufacturing is both complimenting and competing with subtractive manufacturing techniques.
