You may not realize this but your thyroid has the potential to change the structure and shape of your face and today I'm going to be discussing how exactly this can occur. These changes can occur with both hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism but today I want to focus primarily on hypothyroidism.

Your thyroid can change your face by causing:

Facial swelling - This swelling occurs around the entire face.
Eyebrow hair loss - Eyebrow hair loss from your thyroid is usually in the lateral 1/3 of the eyebrow and is specific to thyroid problems.
Generalized hair loss - In addition to eyebrow hair loss, your thyroid can also cause generalized hair loss on the entire head.
Acne - Hypothyroidism can lead to painful cystic and hormonal acne.
Periorbital swelling - In addition to generalized swelling, you may also experience swelling just around the eyes which is known as periorbital edema.
Enlargement of the eyes or proptosis - This usually occurs with hyperthyroidism but 6% of cases can occur with hypothyroidism as well.
Changes in your tongue and broadening of the nose - These changes tend to occur in advanced stages of hypothyroidism are not as common as other symptoms discussed above.

All of these symptoms occur as a result of changes in thyroid function but the good news is that they can be treated and reversed in most cases!

The key? Optimizing your thyroid function with either medical or natural treatments.
