Madurai is famous for its rich heritage, Temples and food. This video is about our “A Day in Madurai” in which we explored the - Alagar Temple, Famous food joints of Madurai and Madurai Market.

Breakfast near Teppakulam - We started our day in the morning by having breakfast at the “Sree Sabrees Hotel” near Teppakulam. We had mini tiffin in the breakfast.

Mini Tiffin Cost - Rs 100

Overall I like the restaurant it was neat and clean and had good food.

Teppakulam - After breakfast, we visited Mariamman Teppakulam. It’s a beautiful square tank which was built in 1645 A.D by Madurai king - Thirumalai Nayak. The Length of this tank is approximately 300 meters.

We also noticed there is a Shiva Temple in the middle of the Square Tank.

Alagar Kovil Temple - After travelling 28 km from the Teppakulam we reached Alagar Kovil Temple - This temple is dedicated to Lord Alagar (Vishnu ji). The temple is renowned for its stunning architecture and serene surroundings.

This Temple was constructed by the Pandya Rulers 1300 years back in the 13th Century.

We met a regular devotee of this temple Mr. Satyanarayan Ji who also briefed us more about the temple and its history.

We also attended the Cultural program inside the temple. Every year, this program takes place here from 17 December to 14 January.

Temple Timings - 6:00 am - 12:00 pm
4:00 pm - 7:30 pm

Lunch at Madurai - After this, we had our lunch at Shri Ram Mess, Madurai at Kaka Thoppu Street. For lunch, we had the traditional South Indian thali.

Food cost - Rs 170 per Thali

Vellai Appam near Temple - After lunch we walked for 10 minutes and reached Gopu Iyengars Tiffin Center near the Meenakshi Temple. This is a 93-year-old famous eatery. We had a famous Vellai Appam & Carrot Halwa.

Vellai Appam cost - Rs 15 per piece
Carrot Halwa - Rs 28

Street Food (Thennai Kuruthu) - Then we tasted a street food of Madurai called Thennai Kuruthu It’s basically an inner part of the Coconut trunk.

Coffee at Tallakulam - After this we travelled 2 km and had coffee at New Visalam Coffee bar at Tallakulam.

Coffee Cost - Rs 25

Madurai Market - After this we reached near the temple and we explored the market of Madurai. We have seen a lot of jewellery shops there someone told me that here in Madurai Market you can find approx. 2000 jewellery shop.

After this, we ended our day
