A simple ultralight harness for a bear canister is created to make it easy to pull the canister out from inside a backpack or to strap the canister on the outside of the backpack. The harness weighs about 8 grams as shown and costs almost nothing to make. The harness is easily removed for deploying the canister overnight in bear territory and easily reattached for use with a backpack. The harness also makes it easy to pick up and carry the bear canister with one hand, so do not leave the harness attached if you don't want a bear to also use it!

The jig made of wood and 4 nails shown at about 6:00 in the video has drilled into the wood 2 pairs of holes spaced 70 mm apart with the 2 holes of a pair spaced about 6 mm apart. The holes are larger in diameter than the nails so that the nails can be easily and loosely placed in the holes and removed as needed. That is, the nails are NOT hammered into the holes. It should be easy to design your own harness with any dimensions you choose, but I just showed a way that works well enough for me.

The longer zigzagging cord is tied to the 5-fold end pieces in 4 of their loops by simple overhand knots and simply looped through the 5th loop on each side, so that when the micro lineloc is loosened a huge opening is created for the bear canister to be released from the harness. I threaded the cord without knot-tying, marked the cord where I wanted the knots to be with a Sharpie, removed the cord, then re-threaded and re-tied at the marks I had made. While the original inspiration was snow chains, I"m sure you will be thinking of a drum.

A male cardinal provides background singing, too.

I am happy to answer any questions and comments! Thanks for watching!
