Blue whales and humpback whales are the largest animals in the world. Blue whales are marine mammals. Blue whales give birth. Blue whales make strange noises. Blue whales look blue-gray or silver. Baby blue whales are 23 feet long and weigh about 4,400 pounds. The blue whale is the largest animal in the world. Blue whales are marine mammals. The largest animal of all time is the blue whale. It weighs about 150 tons and grows up to 30 meters or 100 feet in length. The longest blue whale is a female blue whale with a length of 29.5 meters and a weight of 180 tons. A female whale carries a baby in the womb for 2 to 3 years. A newborn baby blue whale is 23 feet long and weighs about 4400 pounds. Baby blue whales grow very fast in the first eight months. Because then they drink the fatty milk of the mother whale. They look blue under the sea, but when they rise above the sea, their color does not look blue. Blue whales are blue-grey or silver in color and have a yellow belly. No matter how big the body, blue whales eat only small animals. Crabs, lobsters, crayfish, and various krill organisms are their main food. An adult blue whale eats an average of about 8 tons of krill per day. They can consume up to 3,600 kg of food during extreme hunger. Their tongues can weigh as much as an elephant. Blue whales are baleen whales, meaning they have fringed plates of fingernail-like material, called baleen, attached to their upper jaws. The whale swallows a whole fish shell with water, then closes the mouth and expels the water through the gap in the jaw. Blue whales live in all the world's oceans except the Arctic, sometimes swimming in small groups but generally preferring to travel alone or in pairs. They often spend the summer in polar waters and move towards the equator as winter approaches. These graceful swimmers cross the ocean at over five miles per hour, but when excited they can go over 20 miles per hour. The blue whale is one of the loudest animals on the planet. They emit a series of pulses, moans, and groans and it is thought that, in good conditions, blue whales can hear each other from 1,000 miles away. Scientists believe that they use these voices not only to communicate but also to love and communicate with each other in the lightless depths of the ocean. Along with that is their excellent hearing. The blue whale is one of the longest-living animals on earth. Scientists have discovered that by counting the wax-like layers of a dead whale's earplugs, they can make a rough estimate of the animal's age. The oldest blue whale found using this method was determined to be about 110 years old. The average lifespan of a blue whale is about 80 to 90 years. In the 1900s, aggressive hunting of whales in search of whale oil drove them to the brink of extinction. Between 1900 and the mid-1960s, about 360,000 blue whales were killed. They finally came under protection from the International Whaling Commission in 1966. There are still few whalers left, as well as attacks by whale sharks and killer whales, and many are injured and killed each year by large ships. Many whales lose their lives in such fishing trawls and entanglements. Currently, the international agency NOAA Fisheries and its partners are working to conserve and rebuild blue whale populations worldwide.
