Caught between opposing forces of heat and chill, animals and plants must adapt or die. But cold is also a life-giver and an ally that can bring great riches and with the sun. In South America, the equator crosses a country which bears its name, Ecuador. The sun faces an extreme challenge here from the high peaks of the Andes mountains on the tops of Ecuador's volcanoes. It's as if the North Pole has come to the Equator, the these peaks are closer to the Sun than anywhere else on the equator yet this is its coldest region. Here, a constant battle rages between hot and cold, where life must face nights like polar winter and days like hot summer.
