Kyōka IZUMI ( 泉鏡花 )
The World of Kyōka Izumi: Where the Supernatural Meets Innocence and Indulgence
Did you know a Japanese writer who had a strong fascination with the supernatural, particularly ghosts, and also had an intense sensitivity to the beauty of the mysterious world ?
Kyōka Izumi, a renowned Japanese author of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, crafted literary works that stand out for their unique portrayal of the bizarre within a backdrop of innocence and indulgence. His writing style, characterized by its blend of the supernatural, aestheticism, and deep sensitivity, offers readers a glimpse into a world where the extraordinary coexists with the life in Japan.

In his critique of Kyōka Izumi's novels, Sōseki Natsume acclaimed Kyōka as a literary genius, highlighting the depth and brilliance of his work. Ryūnosuke Akutagawa echoed this sentiment, praising Kyōka as a master whose influence transcends time, establishing him as a foundational figure in Japanese literature.

Junichiro Tanizaki further elaborated on Kyōka's literary significance, emphasizing his unparalleled creativity and unique perspective on Japanese culture.
According to Tanizaki, although living through times marked by significant Western influence, Kyoka’s works maintain a distinctly Japanese essence that sets them apart. Within this realm, which we refer to as the « Kyoka World,» he masterfully portrays elements of mystery, elegance, and grace.
What sets Kyoka apart is his ability to depict abnormal phenomena without conveying any sense of pathology; instead, his narratives exude brightness, sophistication, and a profound sense of innocence.
This distinctiveness makes Kyoka stand out as a truly exceptional figure in literary history, as his works represent a quintessentially « Japanese» essence that remains unmatched by his contemporaries.
It would be evident that he is one of the authors whose brilliance truly shines in the original language.
