It's been the conventional wisdom that no gears deeper than 4.70:1 will physically fit into the Bronco's factory M210 Front Drive Unit. So we ordered some 5.13 gears from Yukon to find out for ourselves. Long story short: they fit just fine. Check out the video to see what it takes!

In our last video we mentioned that we're "gearing up" for an upgrade to 37" tires for Chanel, our 2021 2-Door Base non-Sasquatch Bronco. Re-gearing is an essential step toward that project. Luckily we were able to source a set of used front and rear Badlands axles with factory lockers, to work on ahead of time without taking the Bronco off the road.

We enlisted the help of our friend Mike Duncan of FourXDoctor in Riverside, California to set up the gears while we followed along. Mike has set up hundreds of gears in straight axle Jeeps and Early Broncos as well as a few IFS diffs, but this was his first crack at the Bronco M210 FDU. We all learned some things along the way. We only showed the work on the Front Drive Unit since the rear M220 is a known entity with no mystery or caveats. HUGE thanks to Mike for the help. If you're in Southern California, look him up for any gear work, drivetrain, suspension or fabrication on your 4x4. In this video we're installing Yukon's 5.13 ring and pinion for the Bronco M210 FDU, M220 rear axle, and their Master Install Kits for both. Here are links for everything.

Lastly, between the time we started this project and completed this video, it has also been independently confirmed on the Bronco6G Forum that the new Nitro 5.29 gears also fit fine in the stock M210 FDU. So it turns out, along with Yukon's 5.13 and 5.38, there are now several options for lower gears for those with the stock M210. This isn't exactly "news", as both companies have obviously test fit their products during their own R&D. But for some reason the myth that deeper gears don't fit has persisted, as I ran into it repeatedly during my own research. I've come to the conclusion that that claim must have been based on gears for the Jeep Wrangler JL version of the Dana M210, at a time when those were indeed the only aftermarket gears available for the M210, so it was a valid point at the time. And as Internet wisdom tends to do, it has persisted even though products are now on the market that defy it. So while this isn't exactly "news", we're doing our part to help change and update the conventional wisdom on this subject. Also as an addendum, Ford Performance now offers their own pre-loaded FDUs with 5.13 or 5.38 gears, but they do not (as of the time of this writing) offer the gearsets by themselves for customers to upgrade their stock FDU.

Thanks for watching, please like this video if you found it useful, and subscribe to make sure you don't miss the next stage in Chanel's upgrade path as we have several cool mods planned to coincide with the 37" tire upgrade!
