Open chord and Barre Chord are buzz words that get thrown around a lot by guitar players, but sometimes for a beginner they can often be confusing.

Some may think that open chords are locked into open position and Barre Chords are big multi-string giants that are a huge challenge to grip. While every chord does require; understanding, practice and strength to play well, there are a significant number of ways to work with basic chords definitely worth mentioning.

This lesson will focus on one of the most popular beginner chords in the first-position called; “F” Major. It is set up at the first fret position and while it generally is not taught as a mobile shape, I will show you a stable way to transition it for optimal performance played within a Lydian Mode harmony.

The simple modifications we will study include transitioning the Major sound of “F” to an “Fsus2” and also bringing the “Fsus2” up a whole-step to generate a “G5” (power-chord). The new position (at 3rd fret), will also include opening up the 2nd string (B), and adding a “G” octave for a rich “G” Major sound.

These simple chord transitions to a 1st position “F” Major offer an adequate amount of mobility, plus simplicity to the “F” chord harmony applied as Lydian.
