I absolutely love the BMW M4. It is, by far, my favorite car I’ve ever owned. However, that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have some very weird problems. Today, we’re going to dive into some of the problems that we’ve noticed on our 2015 BMW M4 F83 in Yas Marina Blue and talk about what issues bother us most and what issues still need to be addressed for repair.

About this video: First off, let’s talk about water. You see we happen to have a BMW M4 F83 model. That means it’s a convertible. Thus, it needs to run water a bit differently than the F82 coupe models. So if you look in the rear behind the door, you will see how water flows down into this area of the car.

That’s all fine. It’s supposed to flow here, and then, flow gracefully out of the bottom of the car. In practice, however, that’s not the case. You see, BMW didn’t put a drain hole in the shield under the car just in the metal. That means that water gets trapped in the body work behind the door. And we aren’t talking a little bit of water. We’re talking A LOT of water.

So much water in fact that if you stop quickly, you will hear it sloshing around behind your head. It’s honestly very odd the first time in happens.

The fix for this is unscrewing a few of the plastic screws that hold the shield on under the car and pull it back a bit. Water will then start poring out of the car like a water fall.

From there you wait until the water stops. Now, this can be fixed permanently by drilling holes on each side of the car through the shields, and we will be doing that. However, it is a weird problem of the convertible M4s.

The weird issues don’t just stop there though. A few days ago, I went to get into the M4, and I noticed that the M logo didn’t appear on the gauge cluster. That was odd, but I started the car anyway. However, the instruments were all dead.

Like nothing changed on them. I didn’t get any speed, RPM, fuel, or temperature readings. The car was on and working, but it wasn’t showing any information. I then started testing other things. The bluetooth, radio, and speakers in general just didn’t work. Check control didn’t show anything, and the top wouldn’t move. It was like the button didn’t work at all.

This would have concerned me more if we didn’t have that sweet bumper to bumper Carmax warranty, but luckily, we do. I called, got an appointment setup, and was ready to get the car on a tow truck when the gauges started working again. As did the the Bluetooth, radio, and convertible top.

It is like nothing ever happen. From what I’ve researched, this is most likely due to the software being out of date. We will be getting that updated, but until we do, the car now runs and drives great. Like it never happened.

You know I think the best part of my 6 years of BMW ownership is that so many problems do fix themselves. I had a similar issue on my old 428i, and it also just fixed itself.

Speaking of though, one problem that hasn’t fixed itself is our front center speaker on the dash. This speaker is blown. Luckily, that CarMax warranty has it covered, but I have seen it is common in M4s over 50,000 miles, so if you are looking for one, be sure to play some base heavy music and check it.

Also keep in mind that the M does pump engine noise through this speaker, and that will cause it to pop and crack even if the radio is off. Honestly, that’s the worst part of it being blown for me. It is a constant reminder that there is an issue with that speaker.

Now, I know this is par for the course with M cars, and that is why we got that warranty. The fact that Carmax will offer a warranty on a car like this blows my mind completely. They do though, and that means people like me can take advantage of it.

These are the quirks you can expect from an M car. Luckily, if you buy a M, you are probably a BMW enthusiast like me, and just laugh at the problems and look at them as the car just making sure you still love it.
