In A/C systems, detecting and addressing refrigerant leaks is critical. A system with insufficient refrigerant typically indicates a leak, which must be resolved prior to refilling. Remember: It is illegal to fill a leaky air conditioning system.

When conducting leak tests, the use of ultraviolet light is recommended, but only effective if a contrast agent was added prior to the leak occurrence. Safety is paramount; always wear UV safety goggles during this process.

However, be cautious with contrast agents as they can diminish the lubricating properties of compressor oil, increasing wear on the system. Precise dosage is crucial to avoid potential clogging of valves. Note that this method is only applicable for preventive measures and has limitations in detecting smaller, inconspicuous leaks.
