Video transcript:

In this short video, I’m going to discuss Shopify POS Lite vs Pro, and help you work out which version of Shopify’s point of sale system is right for you.

OK, so there are two main reasons to use Shopify POS Lite.

One — it lets you sell at point of sale quickly, and cheaply.
The key thing to understand about Shopify Lite is that it is bundled with every Shopify plan — there are no extra charges for using it. This means that you can sell with Shopify POS Lite for as little as $5 per month. It’s also very quick to set up.

By contrast, Shopify POS Pro is an add-on that costs $89 per month, per location — meaning that if you want to sell in more than one locationthan location at once, things can get expensive pretty quickly.

Two — it’s really easy to use.

If all you want to do is accept simple payments in one location, Shopify POS Lite lets you do that really easily — all you’ll need really is your phone and a card reader.

By contrast Shopify POS Pro, which is geared more towards retail outlets and multi-location selling, may be overkill for merchants with basic POS needsneed. It will usually involve more configuration and more hardware.
But ultimately, you may find yourself outgrowing Shopify POS Lite quite quickly — especially if you plan to sell in more than one location at once. And that’s where the ‘Shopify POS Pro’ plan comes in.

I’ll discuss the contexts in which Shopify POS Pro can be the right fit for merchants in just a moment, but before I do, it’s worth flagging up that if you’re interested in using either version of Shopify POS, do make use of our special sign-up link — you’ll find this in the video description. This gives you access to a version of Shopify that can be used for 3 months for just $1 per month — meaning that you’ll have plenty of time to experiment with Shopify and point of sale.

OK, so let’s look at the key reasons why you might want to consider using Shopify POS Pro over Shopify POS Lite.

One — it lets you sell in multiple locations.

Unlike Shopify POS Lite, the Pro version lets you sell in as many locations as you want. The downside is that every location you add to a Shopify POS Pro subscription brings an $89 per month fee with it.

But this will only represent a small percentage of a successful retail operation’s outgoings, and the ‘per location, per month’ approach to pricing means that the POS Pro plan is flexible and scalable.

Two — it gives you a lot more control over how your staff use POS.

If you want to reward staff for their performance, give them different access rights to your POS system, or assign different roles to them, then Shopify POS Pro is a much better option than the ‘Lite’ version. It gives you a really wide range of tools for managing your team’s relationship with your POS system.

Three — it gives you a lot more customer-focused features.

Shopify POS Lite lets you accept payments from your customers cheaply and simply, but that’s about it. By contrast, Shopify POS Pro lets you do much more for your customers. Unlike the ‘Lite’ version, it lets you facilitate exchanges; provide custom receipts; apply discounts; and offer local pick up options.

So, to sum up, Shopify POS Lite is suitable for merchants who want an easy and affordable way to sell in person in one location.

Shopify POS Pro is better for merchants who need to sell in multiple locations, want more control over how staff use POS and would like to offer their customers more purchase and delivery options.

I hope this video clarifies which version of Shopify POS is right for you, but if you need any more info, do check out our full blog post on Shopify POS pricing — this goes into the topic in a lot more depth. There’s a link to this in the video description.
