how to make any hair color a toner at home.

*key points:
•toners cancel out unwanted tones (usually oranges, yellows & reds)
•toners are a separate hair color formulation (mostly done right after lightening)
•toners typically only change tones, not levels (lightness or darkness)
•toners like T18 will change the tone and level of hair (not recommended for blondes that have dimension or lowlights)
•The hair color box does not have to say "toner" for it to be a toner. You can make a toner out of any permanent hair color by mixing it in a 1:1 ratio (1 part color to 1 part 10 volume developer) and applying it to towel-dried hair for up to 15 minutes.
•to find the correct toner, find your hair color level (1-10), then find your uwanted tone (yellow, orange, green or red). You are looking for a hair color that is the same level but the opposite color of the tone (if you have hair that is a level 9 yellow, you are looking for a 9V hair color to use as a toner)
•any shade of hair can use a toner (it's not just for blondes)
•darker hair that has a green tint can be toned using something with red (I would personally suggest using a color with pink in it- it makes a really nice natural color. Pink hair colors are often labeled "blush" or "rose"
•toner is applied quickly to towel-dried hair. It does not have to be a super neat application.
•If you are unsure about the toner, a strand test is recommended. Take a piece from the back and apply the toner, allowing it to process to ensure it's the color you want before committing to your whole head.
•once the toner is applied, cover it with a plastic cap or bag
•processing time is up to 15 minutes, checking it every 5 minutes
•rinse with cool water until the water is clear; you do not have to shampoo it out unless you prefer to
•toners last about 3 weeks (may be longer or shorter due to how much you shampoo your hair)
