With the cost of food rising, you may want to consider having an extremely efficient urban farm at home. This is the system my friend Chad shared, and I re-hacked it so that it will enable me to water it even less, not have insect damage, and potentially, with the cages, avoid beer and predators that mess with your food stash (in theory). The consistent level of moisture in the soil created in a wicking bed provides the plants with a readily available supply of water to take up what they need when they need it. This same principle of capillary rise is what helps transport the water from the roots of the plant to the leaves.
