Raised in a devout LDS home, "Maven" internalized teachings on divine gender roles and priesthood authority. Though recognizing inequality, she accepted exclusion as part of God’s plan. At church schools, the strict dating norms felt stifling and patriarchal. Understanding her divine worth as contingent on a future partner, Maven lamented what she felt was lesser love from God.

Serving a mission expanded her worldview through profound spiritual experiences. Connecting deeply with investigators and other sisters fostered an independent, confident faith centered on Christ. But returning home, expectations to marry quickly resumed, and with them, that message of being less-than without a husband. Still single, Maven grappled with her place in a church that couldn’t seem to value what she offered on her own.
