Data collection (observational/statistical research) is the process of gathering and measuring information on variables of interest in an established systematic fashion. Data are typically numbers, the results of counts or measurements, but can be from other processes. Raw data appear to be in the form of pictures, words or even electronic or acoustic signs. Thus, satellite images or other representations. The data has to be transformed typically into numbers and must be associated with some meaning. The goal of this lecture is to 1) enhance your capacity to conceptualize and design the data collection process, 2) formalize the acquisition of information for statistical analysis, and 3) make sure to achieve high-quality data.
