Happy New Year in April? Nuri goes to Laos’ Pi Mai Festival

Laos welcomes the New Year on January 1 and then celebrates it again in April. In mid-April, which is when the dry season switches to the rainy season, various festivals are held throughout Laos to celebrate the New Year holiday, or “Pi Mai”. During Pi Mai, Laotians sprinkle water on family and friends, as well as tourists, to wash away the bad and wish for good luck. “Diplomat Talks - Nuri's Day of Diplomacy” shows Nuri’s on-the-ground coverage of diplomacy, and how Korea and other countries are engaging with each other. This week, Nuri attended the Pi Mai celebration held at the Embassy of Laos in Seoul. Through this event, we will take a look at Laos' New Year's celebration culture as well as the Buddhist culture that is deeply ingrained in the daily lives of the Lao people. Nuri also interviewed Laotian students at the Pi Mai celebration and learned about people-to-people exchanges between the two countries.

4월에 해피뉴이어? 나피디, 라오스의 ‘삐마이’ 행사에 가다

라오스는 1월 1일에 새해를 맞이한 후, 4월에 다시 한번 새해를 축하한다. 건기가 끝나고 우기가 시작되는 분기점인 4월 중순이 되면 라오스에서는 새해 명절, 즉 ‘삐마이’를 맞아 각지에서 다양한 축제가 열린다. 삐마이 기간 동안 라오스인들은 나쁜 것을 씻어내며 행운을 기원하는 의미로 가족과 친구는 물론 관광객에게도 물을 뿌린다. 나누리 피디가 발로 뛰며 알아본 다양한 외교가 소식을 전하는 ‘디플로맷 토크 – 나누리 피디의 매우 외교적인 하루’. 이번 주에는 나피디가 주한 라오스 대사관에서 열린 삐마이 축하 행사에 참석했다. 이번 행사를 통해 라오스의 새해맞이 문화와 함께 라오스 사람들의 일상에 깊숙이 스며든 불교 문화도 함께 살펴본다. 또한 나피디는 삐마이 축하 행사 현장에서 라오스인 유학생들을 인터뷰하며 한국과 라오스 간의 인적 교류에 대해서도 알아봤다.
