Skul: The Hero Slayer Launch Review

PC Release (Jan 21)
Console Release (TBD Later 2021)

Skul is yet another rogue lite game that I have recently fallen in love with. While it may have a hard time keeping up with the big hitters like Dead Cells, Rogue Legacy, and Hades. It has no problem carving its own path and proving that there is still room within the genre for fun and captivating runners up. What caught me most about Skul was that despite many rogue lite mechanics becoming staples and many similar contenders borrowing more heavily from the big names in the rogue space Skul decided to try to mix things up a little and do things slightly differently. These design choices were a little bit of a mixed bag, some were impressive or even strikingly good, where some were only luke warm. The biggest stand out here is the class system where you can swap you heads and carry up to 2 classes at the same time. This allows you to customize your character to fit your play style with literally dozens of heads. The draw back with this system is that while it is a very ambitious system, the execution does come at the cost of some balancing issues where some of the classes feel objectively less useful than others. Overall I walked away from Skul with a feeling of wanting to go right back in, and if you're looking for a rogue lite to leave you feeling the same way, I enthusiastically endorse this one.
