In this video I’m going to show you how you can track dirt on construction sites with drone surveying.

Did you know that drone surveying has become an indispensable tool in an earthworks project? But you have to do it right.

With that, here’s a quick preview of the steps that I’ll cover in this video:

First, I will solve the common problem that is inherent to drone surveying: machines. Elevation models always contain objects that you don’t want to include in your earthworks calculations. I will show you how to quickly remove machines through a single click.

Next, I show how to create a cut-and-fill map between drone surveys taken at different points in time. I will also break down that cut-and-fill map in different pieces. This will allow you to create detailed progress reports and assess if the invoiced quantities are in line with what you have measured.

Then, I will learn you how to overcome another common problem: 2D design files. Engineers often provide you with a two-dimensional plan only showing contours and elevation annotations. I will teach you the techniques on how to convert such two-dimensional files to a 3D surface. Once that design is ready you will be able to assess how much earthworks need to be accomplished. The spot heights give you a detailed understanding of how much dirt needs to be cut or added at regular spacings.

Finally, I show you the entire time lapse of the Dawsonville construction project from start to as-built!
