A long-established approach to helping people through traumatic experiences is to get the victims to 'relive' their trauma by 'talking it through', or even by hypnotically reliving it as it happened. Getting people to 'relive' their trauma is NOT therapy, and if this approach could heal PTSD then the first real flashback would do the trick.

So in this video I'll explain what's wrong with this (everything!), the approaches to treating post traumatic stress disorder that can make the trauma worse, and what approach to take instead.

Key points in the video include:

0:00 Introduction
4:00 - why the long-standing approach of 'reliving' a traumatic experience can make the trauma worse
7:07 - how your memories are made
7:55 - memories that won't fade for PTSD sufferers
10:00 - examples of effective trauma treatment (and their drawbacks)
13:02 - why I think all therapists need to know how to use the Rewind Technique
