A myofascial trigger point is a hyper-irritable spot, usually within a taut band of a muscle. Trigger points are painful when you push on them and tend to refer pain to another location. They can, also, alter the motor function of a muscle and wreak havoc on biomechanics. Tim Sawyer, PT takes you on a guided tour of trigger points that cause shoulder pain which include the subscapularis, pectoralis minor, infraspinatus, teres minor, scalene, rhomboid, trapezius, supraspinatus and deltoid muscles. Grab a Theracane self massage tool and follow along. If you don't have a Theracane, we have another video using a lacrosse ball, tennis ball or massage ball. Follow those up by doing our shoulder stretching videos. (see below for links)

In our office, we use manual therapy, extracorporeal shockwave therapy, class IV laser therapy, spray and stretch and deep relaxation techniques to address the trigger points.

Biomechanics including exercise modification, ergonomics, sleep positioning, automobile seat positioning can be necessary when approaching myofascial pain syndrome. There are times when this video and the others will be enough but when the trigger points have been there for a long time, is when multiple modalities must be employed.

The best of those modalities is ESWT (extracorporeal shockwave therapy). ESWT has been proven to help myofascial trigger points, scar tissue, tissue regeneration and more..
