Historian Neil Oliver has strongly criticised the SNP as the fallout over the Alex Salmond inquiry continues.

Speaking with talkRADIO’s Mike Graham, he said: “They’re not about freedom of speech or anything else, they’re about silencing freedom of speech and they’re not about independence, they’re about privacy.”

It comes after Conservative MP David Davis used parliamentary privilege to disclose messages that raised concerns about the processes surrounding the investigation into the former SNP leader.

The Scottish government has since provided talkRADIO with this statement:
“Assertions of interference in the complaints investigation are wrong and not
supported by the evidence.

“While the Scottish Government cannot reveal the specific context of this exchange, as this may identify staff members, and would breach confidentiality, the exchange is not about the complaints that had been submitted by Ms A and Ms B under the harassment procedure.

“The individual referred to in this exchange did not raise a complaint under the Scottish Government Harassment Procedure, which the Committee inquiry is considering.

“The Scottish Government has taken unprecedented steps to provide the Committee with the information it has requested in line with data protection, confidentiality and legal restrictions.”
