Liver diseases are becoming increasingly common, underscoring the need for better public awareness and preventive measures. Celebrated every year on April 19th, World Liver Day focuses on the importance of liver health and encourages us to prevent liver disease.
I am Dr Abhishek Jain, Consultant, Gastroenterologist at Narayana Hospital, MMI, Raipur. This year, the theme for World Liver Day is "Keep Your Liver Healthy and Disease Free." The liver performs critical functions such as aiding digestion, regulating blood sugar, and filtering toxins from the blood, making it essential to maintain health.
To keep your liver in good shape, engage in regular physical activities like walking, jogging, or swimming for 30 to 45 minutes daily. Eat a balanced diet rich in proteins, fruits, and vegetables, and limit the intake of sweets and fatty foods. It's also crucial to stay hydrated and manage your weight.
Preventive vaccinations play a key role, especially against viral infections like Hepatitis A and B. Avoid harmful substances such as drugs, tobacco, and alcohol, as these can severely damage your liver. Also, practice safe hygiene by not sharing needles or personal items like razors and toothbrushes, which can spread infections.
On this World Liver Day, let's commit to taking excellent care of our liver and leading a healthy lifestyle. Together, we can work towards keeping our liver healthy and disease-free.
