This morning’s topic — “Hypnosis and Trance, in the Work of Gurdjieff and the practice of Sufism”

Most of us spend significant time each day in random everyday trances. While these trances are occasionally enjoyable and often at least serve some immediate end, this is not the best use of our time. There are ways to use trance as a tool, applying intention and skill. And most importantly, through developing a solid understanding of trance states generally, we can endeavor to bring ourselves out of our everyday trances and clear the way for our true awakened state.

Other seekers of the past have taken this road as well. Early in his career, Mr. Gurdjieff did a great deal of experimentation with hypnosis. We suspect that what he learned about the workings of the mechanical aspects of humans through such study informed his work for the rest of his life.

Sufis have used trance and hypnosis for many purposes, especially as a learning tool, for many centuries.

In order to make conscious use of trance, we need to understand what it is and what it isn’t. We also need to realize that there are many kinds of trance.So please join us for an hour or so and let’s discover how we can turn something that is often a liability into a valuable tool.
