Tonight’s topic – “Intimate Presence and the Iron-Willed Love of Rabia al-Basri”

Back in 8th century Arabia, as in our time and place, most people were well distracted from the Truly Real. They were thoroughly caught up in the clamorings of doom-and-gloom religious preachers of various flavors, as well as the natural daily concerns of worldly living.

But then came along a beautiful, sharp-witted woman Sufi by the name of Rabia. Perhaps through having experienced great loss and unsafety at a young age, she found herself called to practice a vastly different way of being in the world. She sought to tear away the veils of disconnection, fully embracing a philosophy of Divine Love between the Truly Real and the human being. The only obstacle to experiencing this abundant love, she insisted, was our seemingly willful obliviousness to its presence.The symbolic power of her raw, single-minded, intimate devotion to God served to help catalyze a kind of cultural revolution toward love that continues to echo around the world to this day.
