Being a nervous car passenger can make car journeys awkward at best. You start worrying, maybe even break out into a cold sweat or figuring out excuses as to why you don't want to get in the car.

Sometimes you can get away with that - "I'd rather walk and get some fresh air" or even "I've changed my mind".

But most of the time you've just got to open the passenger door of the vehicle, clip on your seat belt and prepare for a white knuckle ride with every bump and movement adding to your nervousness and worry.

Sometimes there are good reasons to be a nervous car passenger - your driver is in a rush and seems to have their road rage switch turned up to the maximum.

But most of the time it's just your mind playing with you.

And our minds do a good job of playing with us and making us nervous and worried.

You could do some breathing exercises.

They work well - just take a few deep breaths, taking the time to slowly inhale, filling your lungs, holding your breath for a second or two and then slowly exhaling. Letting your fears, worries and nervousness flow out as you breathe out.

With the agreement of the driver, turning on the radio or playing some music can be a good way of distracting yourself.

If it's a chat show, actively listen to what's being said. That means concentrating on the words coming out of the speakers, not the words being spoken inside your head.

If it's music, actively listen to the music. Make it a game to find things you've not heard before. Anything to take your mind off the thought of being stuck in the passenger seat of the car.

Find a tame driver who'll take you on a quiet test drive and will work with you to reduce your nervousness. That's probably a different driver from the one who fills you with fear and dread at the mere thought of sharing a journey with them. But they are out there - ask around your friends and family.

If being a control freak is the root cause of being a nervous passenger - maybe because you keep trying to slam your foot on the brake pedal or twist that imaginary second steering wheel - then that's overcomeable. There are times elsewhere in life when you're not totally in control and you need to apply those times to when you're sitting in the passenger seat, worrying about every move the driver makes and wishing the whole journey was already finished.

Think about using hypnosis to help you stop being a nervous passenger. It works really well and is fast and effective.
